The Wonderful World of Medical Experiments, Then and Now

Two examples of how medical scientists are repeating mistakes they made 70 years ago. Coincidentally, both involve the problems that arise when humans have stuff jabbed into their bloodstreams.

THEN

In 1956 and 1957 the United States Army undertook biological warfare experiments in and around two cities in Florida. One of these involved releasing millions of mosquitoes they had infected with yellow fever and dengue fever, to measure the insects' potential for targetted disease-spreading. Hundreds of researchers were afflicted with fevers, stillbirths, encephalitis and typhoid. Several people -an uncertain number- died as a result. The mosquitoes were weaponised at the Fort Detrick bio-warfare lab (interestingly, the same unit identified as the source of the Anthrax used in the post-911 terror-attacks in Washington DC in 2001). NOW

A fortnight ago, on April 27th, 2021, British Bio-tech company Oxitec released the first batch of 12,000 genetically modified "killer" mosquitoes (from their laboratories) in six locations in (where else?) the Florida Keys. Releases will continue until over 20 million have been set loose. The experiment is intended to reduce the mosquito population in order to prevent the spread of diseases like Zika virus and Dengue fever - according to Oxitec. What could possibly go wrong? THEN

On April 12th 1955, the US government announced the arrival of the first effective polio-vaccination. Within days, manufacture went into overdrive. After 200,000 children had been vaccinated, the government abruptly halted the programme, having discovered a huge batch of vaccines were actually contaminated by live polio virus. 

In the polio outbreak this caused, 40,000 children contracted polio. At least 200 were paralysed and ten deaths were admitted to. Polio vaccination resumed, but it later emerged that between 1955 and 1963, between 10 and 30 percent of the shots were contaminated with Simian Virus 40. THAT'S EIGHT YEARS AND MILLIONS OF DOSES. NOW

In November 2020 Pfizer announced the arival of the first ever anti-Covid vaccine, asserting it to be "95% effective" -a vague, unmeasureable claim that makes a nice headline but has no scientific meaning whatsoever. Manufacture went into overdive immediately. Within days, Astrazenica, Johnson & Johnson and Moderna made similar claims and came rushing into the market with their own vaccines, all four in blatant defiance of  the lengthy, painstaking safety measures usually undertaken before even attempting mass-vaccination. Millions of shots were delivered and taken worldwide. 

By mid-March 2021 however, vaccination programmes were descending into chaos, as the competing vaccines were either suspended or banned by a range of countries from Austria to India. Close examination of Pfizer's own statements show their anti-Covid vaccine neither prevents infection or spreading of Covid-19. Conversely, the one thing the Pfizer -and all three other MRNA vaccines- can guarantee, is a permanent, irrevocable change in your body's immune response, the consequences of which can only be guesswork. The list of adverse incidents ("side-effects") including strokes, miscarriage,blindness and death now being reported is kept firmly out of the headlines -so far.
